Multi-Principal Element Alloy Brazing Filler Metals: Development Trends and Considerations for Industry Readiness

Abstract

Demand for critical material replacement and performance improvements has driven recent interest in developing brazing filler metals outside of the traditional AWS-designated “BAu” gold-base and “BNi” nickel-base series. Multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) lack a singular basis element, unlocking a vast composition space in which to co-optimize key filler material characteristics, including melting point, ductility, oxidation resistance, and constituent element economics. Over 100 studies have investigated MPEA filler materials since 2020. While researchers have identified widely varied candidate alloys, composition selection strategies coalesce around four distinct rationales. These design frameworks continue to mature, driving the recent momentum in MPEA filler discovery. However, arriving at a candidate alloy chemistry and demonstrating proof-of-concept is only the start of a translational journey toward industrial relevance. Engineering factors such as product form (foil, paste, wire) and real-world brazed joint geometry dictate molten flow dynamics and represent critical deployment hurdles. Ongoing research at Colorado School of Mines and commercialization partner HYSA Fillers LLC aims to combine physics-informed fundamentals with high-throughput testing to accelerate industry-readiness for MPEA fillers.
