An Integrated Multiscale Workflow for Process-Structure-Property Control in L-PBF
Talk given by:

Abstract
The ability for Additive Manufacturing (AM), and more specifically Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) AM, to create complex geometries is a double-edged sword. Complex shapes often enhance part value, functionality, and/or performance, but also create a range of conditions during the AM process that can adversely affect part quality and performance. Additionally, the continuous, market-driven increases in AM equipment and part size and complexity have stretched our understanding of the applicability of conventional process and material qualification approaches, modeling abilities, and inspection capabilities to their limits. A validated physics-based process-structure-property-performance (PSPP) simulation suite is needed to fill the technical/engineering and economic gaps, reducing or preventing the adoption of (L-PBF) AM into aerospace systems.
The ongoing work to be summarized presents an integrated workflow approach that connects process parameters, process monitoring, and physics-based computational materials engineering tools to advance material quality assurance and confidence in AM components. The workflow utilizes calibration-backed, multiscale simulation results to propose process parameter changes and optimization based on pre-build analysis to manage thermal history and its effects on the fundamental building blocks of fusion-based AM processes, the weld pool. Validation of models and improved performance of printed components is demonstrated with ex situ metallography and in situ thermal imaging to indicate changes to melt pool characteristics connected directly to complex printed part geometries.
