Technical Talk: A-21®: a new stainless carburizing, nitriding and structural steel

The presentation will introduce A-21®, a unique, versatile, and innovative martensitic stainless steel that can be carburized to develop a deep, hard and stainless case while retaining a strong, tough and ductile core.  A-21 can also be used in the nitrided or quenched and tempered conditions with excellent properties.  Alloy design methodology as well as mechanical and corrosion properties will be reviewed.


About the Speaker:
Dr. Buck is Manager, Product Development at Carpenter-Latrobe Operations and is responsible for developing and commercializing new alloys.  His area of expertise is martensitic stainless steels.  He has over 30 years of experience in academia, R&D and industry.  He holds 15 US and foreign patents with more pending, is a guest lecturer at Texas A&M University, and has authored and given numerous technical publications and presentations at national and international conferences.  He received his Ph.D. and M.Eng. degrees in Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science from Carnegie Mellon University, and his B.S. in Nuclear Engineering from Texas A&M University.  He is the inventor of A-21®, the subject of today’s seminar, which is finding use in aerospace, defense, energy, consumer and industrial markets.”
