About the Talk

The global thermal spray coatings market is expected to grow from USD 10.6 billion (76000 crores INR) in 2019 to USD 14.6 billion (1 lakh crores INR) by 2024 at a CAGR of 6.7%. The aerospace & defence industry is estimated to be the fastest-growing end-use industry of the thermal spray coatings market.  Thermal spray coatings find applications in aerospace, automotive, healthcare, agricultural machinery, energy & power, electronics, and others.  Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) industry use thermal spray and it is expected to increase in India with aerospace companies planning to set up plants in India. Increase in automotive, oil and gas and healthcare industry will lead to increased demand. Metallizing equipment limited, Spraymet surface technologies, Shreenath Engineering Industries, Plasmatron, Industrial Processors & Metallizers, Kothari Metsol, Oerlicon, SJVN Ltd., Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, ARCI, etc are some of major players in India. Thermal spray equipment manufacturing also increasing in India and is being exported to various countries. New techniques such as Cold Spray Technology and new applications are being developed in our research organizations and academic institutions. The latest state of the art equipment are available in India to do cutting edge research. The talk will cover the basics of thermal spray processes and cover some of the regular and potential applications of the technology.

Biography of the Speaker

Prof. Srinivasa Rao Bakshi's obtained his B.E. and M.E. in Metallurgical Engineering from REC Rourkela and IISc Bangalore in 2001 and 2003, respectively. He worked as Scientific Officer 'C' in Bhabha Atomic Research Centre from 2003-2005. He left BARC and obtained his Ph.D from Florida International University (Miami, USA) in 2009. He joined Indian Institute of Technology Madras in Dec. 2010 as Assistant Professor and was promoted to Professor in 2021. Prof. Bakshi's research interest are in the area of Powder Metallurgy and Surface Engineering. His Ph.D. research was focused on carbon nanotube reinforced Al-matrix composites with respect to their fabrication by thermal spray techniques, understanding interfacial phenomena, quantification of carbon nanotube dispersion and its effect on the thermal and mechanical properties. Prof. Bakshi has worked on mechanical alloying, spark plasma sintering, thermal spray coatings, materials joining and weld cladding since joining IIT Madras. Prof. Bakshi has made extensive contributions to the use of reactive spark plasma sintering and developed low-temperature methods for sintering ultra-high temperature borides (ZrB2, TiB2 and their solid solutions), carbides (TiC, B4C and high entropy carbide), in situ metal matrix composites, and high entropy alloys. Prof. Bakshi has established Surface Modifications and Additive Research Technologies (SMART) Lab jointly with Prof. Kamaraj. His current focus is on use of thermal spray for coating, repair, and additive manufacturing. Prof. Bakshi is a highly cited researcher with more than 7900 citations from 120 publications having an h-Index of 44 (as per google scholar). He is featured among the Top 2% researchers list in the Materials field published by Stanford University in 2022 and 2023. Prof. Bakshi was awarded Institute Research and Development Award by IIT Madras for the year 2016 (Junior Level) and 2022 (Mid-career Level). Prof. Bakshi has been an active member of professional societies such as Indian Institute of Metals, Indian Thermal Spary Association, and the ASM International. He is currently the Chairman of ASM International Chennai Chapter. Prof. Bakshi has organized several workshops and conferences and delivered several invited talks. His notable awards include Young Leader Professional Development Award by TMS in 2014 and Fellowship of ASM International in 2024.
