Abstract:

Both natural and synthetic forms of graphite have been used in energy storage technologies for over 125 years. With the commercialization of lithium-ion batteries in the early 1990s, graphite and several other materials became increasingly crucial components for transportable electrification. While the initial growth was in lithium-ion batteries for portable electronics, today sales of electric vehicles continue to rapidly grow and the demand for battery materials is greater than ever. This talk will describe the fundamental role that graphite has in the workings of a lithium-ion battery and explain why graphite will not be soon replaced at large scale. The implications of natural and synthetic graphite availability and recyclability will be discussed.
