Bill - thanks for your service to our ASM community and our manufacturing sector.  Great question!  My initial interest was a boring 'process of elimination' of the 5 engineering degrees that Grove City College had at that time.  What really stoked my interest was my summer internship at Elkem Metals - a ferroalloy producer.  10 ton heat sizes, 60" diameter self-baking electrodes, 10 gauge "taphole guns," smoke, fire - it was awesome!  This led me to a career in the primary metals industry, which I thoroughly enjoyed - with experiences that ranged from operating a melt shop to ICME of the impact that front end had on customers' performance.  The mysteries (mostly variation) that still surround liquid metal processing and its impact on manufacturing are sciences we haven't completely mastered.  Those mysteries are also opportunities that our materials and manufacturing community will benefit from as they continue to be uncovered and understood - by really smart people using advanced tools!  Thanks again for your question, and your service!

Shankar Subburathinam, Secretary, ASM Chennai Chapter in India. ( @Shankar Subburathinam )

Shankar is the Engineering Manager, Advanced Materials Technology-India, Innovation and Technology Development Division, Caterpillar India.

Shankar’s career highlights include:

• Started his career as a trainee engineer 27 years ago, Leyland Motors.
• Shankar has a Master's degree in Metallurgy and Materials science and has been a metallurgist all through his career. 
• Held progressively increasing responsibilities in OEMs and Tier 1 all in the automotive industry. (BorgWarner, Rane- TRW, TAFE- Massey Ferguson).
• Currently, heading the Materials Technology division, Caterpillar India

Shankar would tell emerging ASM professionals: It is definitely an exciting career choice and contributions from the metallurgists for the industry is only going to increase.

Shankar likes to travel, explore new places, people, culture and food.

This week's Thank a Volunteer goes out to:

Aditya Singh ( @Aditya Singh ), Secretary and Programming Chair of the Chicago Chapter

Aditya graduated from Illinois Institute of Technology with a Master of Engineering degree in Material Science and Engineering in December 2019 and while he is still looking for full-time opportunities. He has been working at his school as a volunteer Lab Assistant for a Corrosion Lab which they set up from scratch and doing Research on testing electrochemical behavior in LPBF of Ti64 alloys along with anisotropy corrosion behavior.  

Aditya's experience includes:

• Became interested in Materials in the Summer of 2014 after doing 10-week research at the School of Mines on "Recovery and Reuse of Rare Earth Metals". 
• Last Summer he got an opportunity to go to Denmark's DTU and work on 3 projects related to Materials which was an enthralling experience since I got to learn so much while working on industrial-grade projects.
• Currently, he is working on testing additively manufactured Ti64 implant materials for their corrosion behavior.
• All his projects/experiences in one way or another contribute to the community which serves as a self-motivator. 

Aditya would suggest to emerging professionals: Pick up/Find a research/topic to work on which interests and motivates you, and keeps you on your toes.

Aditya's personal interests: I loves adventures or hiking so whichever city or town I have been to because of research/studies, I make sure that I explore the natural habitat around it. My favorite city is Golden, Colorado. 

Aditya would ask a room of ASM members: How can we connect new/current members with their research topic of interest and mentor them?

Currently Laura is Manager Metallography, Light Optical Microscopy, & X-ray Diffraction; Director Lehigh University Summer Engineering Institute; Faculty Adviser - Student Materials Society, ASM Student Camp, ASM Teacher's Camp

Laura's career journey:

• Received B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from Lehigh University in Materials Science and Engineering. 
• Worked at Alcoa for 8 years as Technical Services Manager / Chief Metallurgist, responsible for special process areas including, metallography, heat treatment, welding, chemical processing, and non-destructive testing.
• Have been at Lehigh since 2013, teaching some of my favorite hands-on lab courses and directing STEM based outreach programs.

Laura's advice for emerging ASM professionals is: Don't be afraid to do something new!  The materials field can take you in many directions so look at new opportunities as chances to learn and grow!

Laura lives on her family's strawberry farm where she grew up.

Laura would ask a room full of ASM members - what they do as a materials engineer - as she is usually fascinated by what they do and how different the answers typically are from one person to the next! ​

• Early in my career he was employed at Buehler Ltd as a Sales Development Manager providing material science sample preparation equipment, supplies, metallurgical microscopes and image analysis software.
• Launched a U.S. sales expansion office, Clemex Corporation, for Canadian-based Clemex Technologies Inc., a pioneering image analysis software designer and marketer.
• Created a dealership representing three optical/electronic product lines serving the industrial laboratory testing market.
• Represented Olympus America specializing in industrial and biological optical microscopes and imaging software.
• Employed as a Sales Account Manager for a high purity copper casting company responsible for world-wide sales of OFC copper rod, wire and rectangular shapes.

Lou would advise emerging ASM professionals: Even though your focus initially will be on the materials aspect within an organization, attempt to understand the entirety of the business to better position yourself to offer an innovative solution or development that will significantly impact the business' success.

In Lou's personal life: "As a longtime automotive enthusiast I enjoy taking my 1968 Chevelle to classic car shows. It is constantly in need of maintenance most of which I like doing myself.  It's a great distraction and allows me to utilize my familiarity with materials science to some degree.  At least that's what I tell myself until I round a bolt off using too much torque or attempt to reverse oxidation."

This week's "Thank a Volunteer Thursday" goes out to Zunjian Yang - THANKS!!

Zunjian Yang, Chapter Vice Chairman in Metro NY-NJ   

Zunjian is the vice president of Cooperman Technology.  Zunjian studied paper engineering in as an undergraduate, knowing he would be dealing with bath tissue for the rest of his life, then came to US to study materials.  He started knowing nothing and no one until getting a job and is now vice chairman.

Advice he would give to emerging ASM professionals is: Trust yourself, 21st century is the century of material.

Zunjian loves soccer, play as a defender, but everyone in my team voted me as the worst defender three years in a row!!

A question he would ask of the ASM member community: Anyone who is working in the defense industry: is it really cool to work there? I heard all the amazing material was studied in there, and only in there.

Sudhakar has a Masters in Metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology , KANPUR (India) 1976.  He is owner, CEO of Subodh Technologists, Material science center accredited as per ISO 17025 (2017) since 2001 with annual sales @ 2 million USD.  Additionally, Sudhakar worked at National Metallurgical Laboratory Jamshedpur as a Scientist.

Sudhakar would tell emerging ASM professional that materials engineering is very exciting interdisciplinary in nature covering hardcore metallurgy and incoming fields like Nano technology ,Bio Materials, Ceramics, Polymers, Additive manufacturing , etc. Material engineers can contribute to society to make life more enriched

Sudhakar Bonde is an M.Tech Engineer from IIT Kanpur and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management. He is the CEO of Subodh Technologists and also the Managing Director of Subodh Metallurgicals Pvt. Ltd.

He is a Life member of several Professional Societies like Institution of Engineers, Indian Institute of Metals, Indian Institute of Welding, Indian Welding Society, ASM International (India) Chapter, ASTM and and Institute of Indian Foundrymen. He has a vast experience in the field of metallurgy which includes production, R&D, Inspection and Quality Surveillance across a diverse group of industries like Foundries, Thermal Plants and National Metallurgical Laboratories. He is also an Empanelled Assessor for Laboratory Accreditation Programme as per ISO 17025 by NABL (Dept of Science & Technology, Govt of India )

This Thursday thanks go out to @Tracy Lenz

Tracy Lenz, Chapter Chair for Phoenix Chapter

Tracy was at Honeywell Aerospace working as a Supplier Development Engineer for Casting and Forging suppliers.  She is no longer with Honeywell Aerospace, but is currently job seeking.

Tracy’s career involves a mix materials science applications; quality engineering, process engineering, and materials engineering for aerospace and medical devices.

A piece of advice to a materials professional: There are many opportunities in materials science with a diversity of industries and applications.  Structure-process relationships rule all engineering endeavors.

Tracy enjoys being outside; trail running, road running, swimming and weight training.  There is so much beautiful nature and national parks to explore in the US.

To a room full of material scientists Tracy would ask:  Where and what are the new opportunities in materials science post pandemic?
