  • 1.  Air oxidation rates of stainless below 1020F (550C)

This is an embarrassingly simple request but I would appreciate a pointer to publication(s) giving oxidation rates in air for both 12% chromium and 316 stainless steels at temperatures below 1020F (550C).  There is lots of data up in the creep temperature range but lower ....?

    Graham,

Oxidation data in air for stainless steels is included in the Corrosion Analysis Network > Corrosion Performance Data (subscription required). One of the sources cited in the database is the article "High-Temperature Corrosion Behavior of Nickel Alloys" from the ASM Specialty Handbook: Nickel, Cobalt, and Their Alloys (J.R. Davis, ed.), ASM International, 2000, p 167-188. That article is also available in the Corrosion Analysis Network.

There are tables in API RP 581 - Risk-Based Inspection, Part 2.B.9 -High Temperature Oxidation, which provide values for 304, 309, and 310SS. You can assume rates like 304SS which is 1 mpy at 1025F.
