    Hi everyone,
Between ASM handbook for metallography and the online access to microstructures database, which one would you recommend...for educational purposes?

Materials Handobook is more easily available and more explicative.

    Sreekar,

If the need is for access to a large number of microstructures, the database is the winner. It includes all of the microstructure images from ASM Handbook, Volume 9, Metallography and Microstructures as well as from previous handbook volumes (including the landmark Metals Handbook, 8th ed., Vol 7, Atlas of Microstructures of Industrial Alloys, published in 1972). The database also features additional image collections provided by noted metallographers such as @Frauke Hogue, Len Samuels, and @George Vander Voort.

As Donato notes, ASM Handbook, Volume 9 is a much better resource for detailed explanation of the metallurgical significance of microstructures and how they can be revealed by metallographic practice. it also has nice "mini atlases" of images for the major alloy families and some nonmetallic materials. The online edition has been expanded to include details on optical microscopy and microstructural analysis of fiber-reinforced composites.

    a follow up question....
i find 1992 prints at affordable cost while new ones are obviously 260$. So, how different in content are they? for a beginner and for educational purposes, would it matter?

The same question sort of goes for alloy phase diagrams.

appreciate if users of these books can offer some advise on that.

Thanks for asking this! I have the same question, and for the same purpose, so I was going to post it before long myself.

    All-
Any plans to add more explanations to the online resource?
