  • 1.  Potential in Pourbaix Diagrams

    Posted 05-17-2021 14:14

    Dear All,

I would appreciate your help with the following questions

    1. Is the potential in a Pourbaix diagram measured always relative to a standard reference such as the SHE?

    2. Could you recommend a text or paper to read about this?

    Thanks,

    Wentao

    Wentao,

The Pourbaix diagrams are in reference to Equilibrium Potential Eo and pH.

They only offer a thermodynamic description of the metal-solution system, that is to say: a material corrodes or does not corrode, or it is passive or not passive or finally: it remains immune or not. They indicate the final state of the system, but do not mention the speed with which this state is reached.

It will not tell you anything about kinetics, that is, the speed at which corrosion will occur.

A very interesting book is: Corrosion and Protection, by Einar Bardal (2003), (Springer)

    Thank you Patricia.

Could you share what the definition of E0 is?

    Thanks,

Wentao Eo is the potential in equilibrium of the reaction.

    HI Patricia,

Let me read the book you recommend first.

    Thanks,

I think the article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pourbaix_diagram is a good intro.
