    Event Description:

    A detailed understanding of the inclusion content as it evolves during liquid steel secondary metallurgy processing and continuous casting is a key to optimizing process and product performance steel. Scanning electron microscopes (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) provide both morphology and chemistry and have long been used to study steel inclusion content. The need to study a statistically relevant sample of the inclusions in steel together with the advent of personal computers drove the affordable automation of SEM/EDS inclusion analysis. With continued advances in computer processing power, detectors, and algorithms, we are now at the cusp of having statistically relevant data supporting generation of new advanced high strength steel (AHSS) grades.

    • Recent advances in automated SEM/EDS analysis technology
    • Case studies demonstrating how these latest advances provide insight into the impact of inclusion content on casting behavior and final product quality
    • The use of automated SEM/EDS to comprehend the output of real-time rapid inclusion assessment using pulse discrimination analysis optical emission spectra (PDA-OES)
    • How the control of calcium additions in certain grades is used to optimize inclusion modification

     

    Speaker(s) Bio:

     

    Scott Story earned a degree in materials engineering from Monash University, Clayton, Victoria, Australia in 1989. He began his career in the steel industry as a research engineer in the field of continuous casting at the Broken Hill Proprietary (BHP) Research – Melbourne Laboratory, Mulgrave, Victoria. With the support of BHP, he received a master’s degree and Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Carnegie Mellon University. He subsequently joined the BHP Project “M” Strip Casting Development team. In 1999, he joined the steelmaking and casting group at the U. S. Steel Research and Technology Center. Since that time, he has worked on various technical aspects of steel secondary steelmaking and continuous casting, with particular emphasis on analysis of inclusion content using computer-controlled scanning electron microscopy (CCSEM). He was the recipient of the AISI Medal in 2003 and 2006 and the AIST Richard J. Fruehan Award in 2014.


    Gary Casuccio received a Master of Science Degree in physics and atmospheric science from Drexel University. His research interest is in individual particle analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy spectroscopy microscopy (EDS) techniques, and he has pioneered the development of automated SEM/EDS techniques for over 40 years. Gary uses this technology to characterize particles in a variety of applications including inclusions in steel, environmental, additive manufacturing powders, wear debris, and soils. He also provides technical focus at RJ Lee Group on projects for industry, governmental agencies, academia, and law firms, and leads development efforts of RJ Lee Group’s next-generation automated SEM/EDS ‘IntelliSEM’ software.


    Jack Mershon has worked in applications at TESCAN for 18 years where he supports the company with product demonstrations, sales support and user training, as well as testing of new systems and software. Jack specializes in their SEM portfolio, which includes the TESCAN VEGA Tungsten-filament SEM, as well as the TESCAN MIRA, CLARA, and MAGNA FE-SEMs.
