    What are the disadvantages with spray cooling after solution heat treatment of aluminum alloys sheet metal parts?

    The only real disadvantage, it seems to me, is the amount of process control and testing required. These requirements are a result of historical distrust of the product due to problems experienced by the military in the 1970's. Because of poor spray design and/or maintenance, a lot of product escaped with local soft spots. To avoid this problem, they discouraged the use of spray quenching and imposed the approval, process control and test requirements you see today.

    Thomas's reply is perfectly right. Spray cooling has been greatly improved by furnace / nozzle suppliers during last decades, with great opportunities to control the deformation from cooling and taking into account all metallurgical requirements regarding the processed sheets.

    On sheet applications leidenfrost effects can make some challenges, mostly in not cooling as fast as expected.

    Yes, and this won't be different in immersion quenching if sheets get too close during immersion !
