    Hello all,

    I am currently researching Thermal Spray - HVOF coatings. I would like to know if there are any simulation codes or numerical equations which can be used to optimize the thermal spray coating behaviour to achieve a specific property and control the porosity as well. It will be really helpful if someone can guide me regarding the same.

    "Due to the complexity of the process, optimizing process
    parameters is generally done experimentally through some
    design of experiment framework. Modeling of the combustion
    process or particle flame interactions can be done using
    commercially available CFD software (ANSYS/FLUENT, etc.)
    but aspects such as microstructure formation, coating
    properties, or the stress state of the coating tend to not
    generalize well. While the latter isn't strictly impossible
    it tends to be more of a limited academic exercise done
    through custom developed codes and I'm not aware of any
    useful commercially available software. At the end of
    the day nothing really beats the utility of a simple DOE
    with some physical intuition as the experiments tend to
    be quick and easy with direct feedback. This is especially
    true as most models rely on a significant amount of
    experimental data for parameter fitting!
