Want to learn about the materials science that goes into designing some of the fastest cars on the planet? ASM Ontario Chapter recently had the opportunity to speak with Matilda McAleenan, Materials Engineer at McLaren Racing Formula 1 Team about the work behind the scenes. Matilda talked about her role and how materials innovation and understanding makes cars faster, more reliable, and safer. If you are interested in the materials science and research going on at McLaren, then this presentation is for you! Watch now "Materials in F1 Racing: What's the Formula"!

Thank you for sharing. My current mentor worked on formula cars in the 60s and we are currently using a lot of the finishing and materials knowledge he gained from that and applying it to control systems at Woodward. He will really get a kick out of this video. Cheers.

    Hi Chris,

That's really fascinating! I'd be curious to know just how far technology has come since the 60s and if there is any aspect of the F1 cars that has remained similar or relatively unchanged after all this time. It's great to hear your mentor enjoyed the video as well.

Thanks for sharing! My sons are upcoming engineers and avid F1 fans. Probably not many families spend Friday night watching materials science lectures for fun, but it really was fun and inspiring!

    Hi @Janine Borofka,

I'm so glad you and your sons enjoyed the talk! You're probably right that there aren't too many families watching this on a Friday night, but the few that do make it all the more worth it for us to find speakers like this and to post the talks online. When we found out Matilda was giving a talk to our chapter, several of our executive team binged watched Formula 1: Drive to Survive on Netflix to get an even better appreciation for the talk and to understand the truly beautiful balance between engineering and human capability in the sport of F1. I'm definitely a fan now too.

    Thanks for sharing
