What are the advantages and dis-advantages of Polymer quenchants  in forging industries ? How to select a polymer quenchant for bigger components ?

There are various type of polymer quenchants, and for forging you would want to use a more "oil like quench".  Advantages include the elimination of the fire hazard when utilizing an oil based quenching fluid and the ability to fine tune the heat extraction based on the alloy being heat treated and the specific concentration of the polymer quenchant for the application.  You want to make sure you have very good agitation around the parts in the quench tank.  Disadvantages would include there will be more care & maintenance involved in using a polymer quenchant (monitoring pH and checking concentration daily) and you run the risk of possible cracking.  Most of these can be overcome with assessing the required metallurgical properties required and putting together a proactive maintenance plan for the operation.

many thanks Mr Chuck for your response . I agree with your points on care and maintenance of polymer quechants in use . Will you please suggest what type of  oil like quench polymer can be selected for medium carbon /low alloy steel for forging components for Automotive parts and bigger components like Gears etc
what care you suggest to be taken to aviod cracking and distortion ?  Do you recommend any polymer quenchants for Gears to replace Marquenchng oil ??  Which are the applications and materials/alloys  where you feel Oil quenchant can not be replaced by Polymer

    Thanks once again
