Abstract: The growing importance of modeling in the development of new lightweight alloys for transportation and other applications has increased the need for materials failure test data taken under extreme regimes. In this talk we describe three advanced techniques to characterize metal failure:
The use of a FT-CMOS2 a sensor-based camera to acquire images of metal failure at frame rates up to 10 million frames per second.
The gigacycle fatigue testing of metals utilizing ultra-sonic fatigue instrumentation.
High-precision strain rate tensile testing of high strength steels utilizing a new universal test machine design employing high speed data acquisition electronics.
