  • 1.  Finding speakers and field trip locations

    1.       How can I get in touch with local Materials Scientists to have them come to my Materials Science classroom to speak? (near Columbus Ohio)

    2.       What are the industries in my local area that would a) allow a tour and b) would be interesting to high school students?

Over the years of teaching Materials Science , my high school students have repeatedly told me that the speakers and the field trips were essential to the class and made it a truly unique - and life-altering experience for them. We always had one field trip and 1-3 speakers per month for the year.

In the age of Zoom meetings – is anyone interested in arranging a short talk/online field trip with my class of students?

    Hi Elizabeth,
I'm not local to there, but there is a Columbus area chapter of ASMI.  Look at this page:
    Chapter Officers - Columbus Chapter
(since you could leave a message on the board, perhaps you have access to that page)
for contacts to get in touch with.  Or maybe someone here (this is a new forum so a lot of members have not started using it) with local knowledge will get in touch with you or forward your request to Chapter members.

I am not sure if Zoom would be as impactful though I know it's what is needed these days.  When I was working I gave annual lab tours to a local community college materials class - perhaps someone could video such a tour and make it available, and then take questions online.

    Paul,
Thank you so much for your response! You are right - Zoom meetings are NOT the same thing as tours, but I would be happy with even video tours this year. High School students need to see that U.S. manufacturing is not dead and they need a better understanding of how things are made. I think it makes us more grateful for what we have, and we could all benefit from more gratefulness in our lives!
    Thank you,
    Beth

    Elizabeth,
This is a good application for the ASM Expert Directory. You can filter the list of experts by U.S. state. Several speakers in and near Ohio are listed.

    Good Morning Beth,

We included a session in the Virtual Materials Camp that included presentations about various manufacturing facilities.  The facilities chosen dovetailed with the experiments the Master Teachers ran in the morning sessions.  Those should be available to you if you reach out to the Foundation.
