It's International Women in Engineering Day! Let's celebrate the incredible impact women engineers are making in the world.

Feel free to give a shout out to a female engineer that has inspired you.

As a child I was fascinated by space, and especially the Space Shuttle.  This played a large part in developing an interest in materials science, and the development of solutions to complex problems.  During my PhD I was wrestling with creating some finite element analysis code (in FORTRAN) and learned a little about the history of coding from some older members in the department (which made me feel a whole lot better about how easy it was for me in comparison!).  This was when I first heard about Margaret Hamilton, the impact she had on Software Engineering and the 1969 moon landing.  Her attitude and hard work changed a lot both in the field of Software Engineering, but perhaps also in the working environment.  This article is a nice overview:

Angela Moran was a grad student who greatly inspired me when I was an undergraduate assisting in her lab. I looked her up and reconnected, and sure enough she continues to inspire others with a foundation https://www.engineersondeck.org/.

My company organized a socially distanced lunch for all the women in our Product Development group yesterday to celebrate INWED. Then I attended an engineering meeting with a 4:1 ratio women:men, a first for me.

    Carrie and co -

As a starting graduate student, my mentor/exiting graduate student Dale inspired me daily.
She came back to graduate school in her late 40's (after starting a full family) to get her own
PhD by 50.  I will never forget her and am always indebted to her.
