    ASM Cleveland Chapter Online Symposium:
    "Modeling of Thermal Processes"

     

    The Cleveland Chapter of ASMI will present a virtual symposium during the month of November entitled "Modeling of Thermal Processes".   This symposium features nine presentations from experts in industry and academia within the field of modeling thermal processes. It will be presented over the course of four evenings in November to facilitate attendance outside of work hours.  This event will consist of four segments distributed over the evenings of November 10, 12, 17 and 19, 2020

     

    The registration fee for the entire symposium is only $80 for all four evenings.  Funds will be applied to the chapter's scholarship fund. To further facilitate ease of attendance and effectiveness in knowledge transfer and implementation, all nine presentations will be recorded and available for downloading by those who register for the event. Registration is open to all ASMI members and interested scientific professionals.   This program promises to be one of the premier educational events of the year.

    Symposium :  Modeling of Thermal Processes

    We are just two weeks away from the first of our four online sessions of "Modeling of Thermal Processes", a virtual educational event beginning with the first two presentations on the evening of Tuesday, November 10th.   The Cleveland Chapter of ASM International is sponsoring this event.  It is designed to introduce our materials community to advances in pertinent modeling approaches incorporating several advantageous features: (1) the advantages of an online virtual event, (2) two-hour evening sessions after work hours, (3) recorded presentations that the registrant can review subsequently to further their understanding, (4) and all for a very low cost of only $80.

    Our first speaker is the Immediate Past President of ASM International, Dr. Zi-Kui Liu, FASM; Distinguished Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Penn State University.   Dr. Liu will be bringing insights into modeling of thermodynamics and calculation of phase diagrams using CALPHAD, a methodology for working out the integrated thermo properties of phase diagrams.  CALPHAD provides an integral basis underlying some of the other useful modeling programs for calculating phase transformations and kinetic effects that are commercially available.

    Symposium Update:  Modeling of Thermal Processes

     We are eleven days away from the first of four online sessions of "Modeling of Thermal Processes", a virtual educational event beginning with the first two presentations on the evening of Tuesday, November 10th.   The Cleveland Chapter of ASM International is sponsoring this event.  It is designed to introduce our materials community to advances in pertinent modeling approaches.  The symposium format incorporates several advantageous features: (1) the ease of an online format, (2) spread over four two-hour evening sessions after work hours, (3) recorded presentations that the registrant can review subsequently to further their understanding, (4) and all for a very low cost of only $80.

    Our second speaker on the evening of November 10 will be Dr. Steven Arnold from NASA Glenn Research Center where he serves as Technical Lead: Multiscale Multiphysics Modeling, and T3 Project: Material and Structures Discipline Lead.  His presentation on ICME is summarized in the following abstract:

     

    Abstract:    "ICME and Future Directions for Material Modeling".

    Over the last few decades, advances in high-performance computing, new materials characterization methods, and, more recently, an emphasis on Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) and additive manufacturing have been a catalyst for multiscale modeling and simulation-based design of materials and structures in the aerospace industry. As a result, NASA's Transformational Tools and Technology (TTT, or T3) Project sponsored a study (performed by a team led by Pratt & Whitney) to define the potential 25-year future state required for integrated multiscale modeling of materials and systems (e.g., load-bearing structures) to accelerate the pace and reduce the expense of innovation in future aerospace and aeronautical systems.  This talk will briefly review the motivations for and findings of the 2040 Vision study and discuss NASA's TTT implementation activities; with special emphasis on modeling activities.    The study, NASA CR 2018- 219771, envisions the development of a cyber-physical-social ecosystem comprised of experimentally verified and validated computational models, tools, and techniques, along with the associated digital tapestry, that impacts the entire supply chain to enable cost-effective, rapid, and revolutionary design of fit-for-purpose materials, components, and systems.  Although the vision focused on aeronautics and space applications, it is believed that other engineering communities (e.g., automotive, biomedical, etc.) can benefit as well from the proposed framework with only minor modifications.  Finally, it is TTT's hope and desire that this vision provides the strategic guidance to both public and private research and development decision makers to make the proposed 2040 vision state a reality and thereby provide a significant advancement in the United States global competitiveness.

    Symposium Update #3:  "Modeling of Thermal Processes"

     

    Next Tuesday, November 10 the first session of the educational symposium, "Modeling of Thermal Processes" begins. This is the first of four evening sessions in this online symposium; the first three sessions having two presentations each, and ending with a final 3-presentation finale.  In Session 1 you will hear presentations on thermodynamic modeling using Calphad by Dr. Zi Kui Liu plus an update on ICME and Future Directions for Material Modeling  from Dr. Steven Arnold of NASA Glenn Research Center.  You can read the abstracts for these talks within my prior updates in this ASM Connect thread.

    Our second session, next Thursday evening, includes presentations on CFD and Heat Transfer During Quenching by Andy Banka, Vice President of Airflow Sciences Corporation followed by Modeling Carburizing and Nitriding Processes for Steel Parts by Dr. Charlie Li of Dante Solutions. 

     

    • (1) CFD and Heat Transfer During Quenching – Andy Banka, Airflow Sciences

    Our first speaker on the evening of Thursday, November 12th will be Andrew Banka, Vice-President of Airflow Sciences Corporation and past chair of the ASM Technical Programming Committee. Mr. Banka will be speaking on the use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to optimize heat treating processes.

    Effective heat treating operations require the controlled transfer of energy to or from the work load, which is driven by the environment within the heat treating equipment. Uneven flow in liquid quenching systems, for instance, can lead to poor properties, variation within the load, and distortion. CFD provides an excellent way to assess the performance of heat treating equipment and develop modifications for improved performance. Heat transfer rates predicted by the CFD model can also be used to improve the accuracy of FEA based metallurgical models. An overview of CFD methods will be provided followed by several example cases.

    • (2) Modeling Carburizing and Nitriding Processes for Steel Parts – Dr. Charlie Li, Dante Solutions

    Carburizing and nitriding are two popular case hardening processes for steel parts. After carburizing or nitriding, a thin case-layer with high hardness and strength properties will be formed on the processed parts. With this case, the wear resistance, bending fatigue performance and contact fatigue performance can be improved. In this presentation, the basic concepts of carburizing and nitriding processes will be introduced from modeling aspects, including essential material properties, carbon or nitrogen boundary conditions, and necessary modeling features. Characterizations of material properties and equipment behavior will be discussed for modeling applications. Practical modeling case studies will be presented.
