The U.S. Department of Defense released its first-ever comprehensive Additive Manufacturing (AM) Strategy in January. The document was developed by the Office of the Secretary of Defense Manufacturing Technology (OSD ManTech) Program Office in partnership with the military services and other defense agencies.
The 22-page document can downloaded at
this site.
The document outlines five strategic goals to achieve broad adoption of AM in the defense sphere:
- Integrate AM into DoD and the Defense Industrial Base;
- Align AM activities across DoD and with external partners;
- Advance and promote agile use of AM;
- Expand proficiency in AM: learn, practice, and share knowledge; and
- Secure the AM workflow.
Thanks to ASM Past President
@William Frazier (Bill Frazier) for bringing this document to ASM's attention. I would be interested in comments from ASM members about how this strategy aligns with the general evolution and adoption of AM technologies and if it has implications that could be reflected in ASM publications, programming, education offerings, or data initiatives.
