Dear members of the Archaeometallurgy Community

We had the first online meeting of this group on November 5. The attendees at the meeting discussed the following points, and we would like input from the broader group that participates on ASM CONNECT:

    • We have the option to create a proposal to become a formal standing committee of ASM. We would like to know if you are interested in helping to develop the committee proposal. This would involve drafting the scope, purpose, and objectives for the committee. I can help the committee to complete the necessary proposal forms as needed.
    • We would like to hold monthly meetings. David Vargas will send a link to a poll to identify the best days and times for a standing monthly meeting.
    • The idea was raised of developing presentations for ASM Chapter meetings (which are currently being conducted virtually). We would like to identify volunteers to develop talks on specific archaeometallurgy topics to be presented at chapter meetings.

I think it will be a good idea if the participants write down their ideas on what the committee is about and how it should function.  Here are my first thoughts:
    1. Objective: Committee's purpose and how it ties in with the overarching agenda of ASM International.
    2. Scope: What is in and what is out. For example, detailed analysis (material and process) of artifacts of significant historical importance; historical development of important technologies; historical sites of significant material's development.
3.Process: Methods to follow to accomplish items in scope.  How to decide what is historically significant?  Specific techniques and qualifications.
    4. Communication: Regular meetings (underway), How we will communicate with committee and the materials community.  Once a project is finished, how will it be preserved and communicated.
    5. Etc
    6. Etc.
Hope it helps generate some discussion for moving forward.
