ASM Community on Archaeometallurgy - Interest in forming a community

  • 1.  ASM Community on Archaeometallurgy - Interest in forming a community

    Posted 09-17-2020 14:02

I would like to gauge the level interest in forming an ASM Community on Archaeometallurgy:

In this I want to present what is called Archaeometallurgy, also known as Historical Metallurgy but recently it has been called: Reverse Engineering, which is very important since it means that this line of research in ancient and heritage metals is part of and is recognized within of Engineering and Engineers.

Obviously, these studies and heritage works must be carried out by interdisciplinary teams led by engineers and made up of professionals of different profiles and professions related to materials, conservation, metallurgy, restorers, architects, archaeologists, and even those related to the art. As engineers, we are called to occupy these places and encourage ourselves, since it is a research niche, and thanks to the development of sophisticated types of laboratory equipment, it is increasingly essential that engineers participate and be interested because we are the ones who can understand and read the messages that the historical pieces try to communicate to us. This line of research is exciting, and it is what I do most and it is what has led me to study and dedicate myself to metallurgy and the analysis of metal parts, etc.

I hope this starts a discussion and becomes a place to share ideas, questions and interest in knowing, sharing experiences, sharing solutions, maybe some of you had the opportunity to meet millennial metals that made you curious ... and since life can take us through different paths and perhaps now this is your chance!

You can also generate content on conservation tasks since now the pieces of museums, private collections, monuments and everything that is of heritage importance have been exposed to the COVID-19 virus and it is important to discuss cleaning and conservation methods, since they are vital as prevention methods.

Please comment below with interest and experiences to determine if a community within ASM CONNECT would be beneficial.

Well I can't imagine I'd have anything to contribute, or time to research but I'd love to be up on the news. So many events in history have to do with some bit of skill or invention that led to a big change. Luther's reformation, that included the idea people should read for themselves, couldn't have happened without Gutenberg's invention making books cheaper 80 years before. And that invention included the need to be able to cast the typeset.

    Yes, Curtis!

Even you don't have time to investigate or to research, it's very good welcome your comment and looks, these type of studies besides the material studies them have an important component of history that one has to read so that one can put tho object of study in a historical context like to put it on the timeline...Thanks for your comment!

There used to be a yahoo group that was active quite a number of years ago in this area. It had not been active for some time prior to yahoo dropping their groups support. There may still be the discussions and photos around somewhere that may be interesting to recatalog for access here.

I've never heard the term reverse engineering applied to this field but Archaeometallurgy certainly.

I find it a very interesting field. It seems to me you have some very distinct areas, conservation, dating, and authentication, are the three major areas that occur to me at the moment. Each has very extensive depth and need of specialized knowledge.

It is a very interesting area of study. I look forward to how this develops.

    Hello David,

    Thanks for your comment!

Yes, it is a very interesting and wide area of development where many professionals could converge together.
I always called it Archeometallurgy ..., I remember those days in the past when in my place, they couldn't pronounce this long word and they didn't believe this was Engineering too!
For more or less 2 years, this name of Reverse Engineering began, because now we can do studies of 3D Printing applied to the repair of museum pieces for example, and also because with these studies we go back to knowing how to do the piece. It was manufactured and know the raw materials as well.
However, we can put Archaeometallurgy as a name too!

Here we all can share content to discuss, contents of interest to keep going. Also then I will put a link to a blog, so all can go and see some studies.
Thanks for your interest! You are Very Welcome!

I would love to be involved in an archeometallurgy community!  The history of metals is one of the fields that pushed me towards metallurgy as a child and I have continued to study it on the side.  Do you have any ideas to get the community started?

For those who are interested, I will be giving a virtual talk called "Reverse Engineering of Historical Swords" on Tuesday Sept 22 for the Eastern Virginia Chapter, and all are welcome to join (link below).  I believe we plan to record it, so if you miss the live talk, please contact me and I will try to get you a copy.

You are very welcome to join!!
This field is what led me to study metallurgy too! Because of my background, I am a Chemical Engineer, I use my knowledge to these studies and apply there because metallurgy and this historical studies of metals are my real passion!

It is nice to find more people with the same passion for this field!!

I don't know how to create an online community, that could have the potential to become a Committee in the near future! Helping hands are very welcome!
I will do the time to join and listen to your presentation! Sure will be so interesting! Thanks for sharing!
I will be on the next Profile of Women in Engineering, AM&P Magazine, there you could know more about me and I am very happy for this opportunity to ASM International!

    Hello James!!

    You are very welcome!!

Nice your appreciation about the support to create a community baby steps surely, online community, and then near future a Committee, because this is an area where are very welcome people from diverse areas like I said in my first post and invitation. People from diverse industrial fields and who they like the conservation and restoration can fit very well, from welding areas too, because since many years ago become of importance the recovery of industrial sites, to give birth to industrial museums. As engineers, we have the knowledge, only we need more people involved.
    Thanks for your nice comment!!

I am the ASM staff liaison to the newly established ASM Core & Emerging Technologies Council. The goal of the council is to help foster and facilitate formation of ASM technical committees such as this proposed one on Archaeometallurgy. It looks like this idea is generating a lot of interest. I will check with my colleagues to get additional names of ASM members who may want to be involved in the committee.

    Archaeometallurgy! What a great idea.

Although retired, I still teach courses, academic and professional development (for ASM), on additive manufacturing. I find that, aside from the interesting recent history of the subject, several examples of additive manufacturing concepts were practiced in the development of ancient civilization.  Some of these practices push forward to current preparations for interplanetary settlement.

Very interesting your post! It would be a good idea if you want to prepare something to share here in this place.
It will surely become a space rich in shared information, and since volunteer hands are very necessary to create an online community and why isn't a committee officially invited. Thanks for your comment!

Ms Carrizo, I would also be interested in participating in an Archaeometallurgy group or committee.  I am retired with no access to a lab for actual testing but when I was in Grad School my advisor and I had discussed about going to Greece after we were both retired to do just that.  Unfortunately he passed away shortly after he retired and I kept working for a long time after that event.  So, even though I am still interested in this I had never had the opportunity to delve into the subject.  Please count me in, if the group agrees with the above caveats.

Dear Silvana, here in Turin (Italy) we have a very famous Egyptian Museum who uses to apply to a fellow female collegue of mine for issues regarding metals. She is a chemist and a corrosionist and is able to support them.
If a webinar is organized I could ask her and the Director of the Egyptian Museum to present a series of issues that have been solved through the Museum/Politecnico di Torino collaboration.

I was glad to see that Donato FIRRAO joined this discussion.  I saw one of his presentations during Materials Week several years ago.  I don't recall specifics, but I do remember that he brought back the history of the metal production methods of when this historic building was constructed. Also- not sure how far you want to go back, but the chemistry and cleanliness of the HMS Titanic steel plates was an interesting topic that one of the Metallurgy professors researched and compared it to the steel in canal locks from the same period in the the American Northwest. This was also published in AM&P.  Their was interesting metallurgy in the restoration of the Statue of Liberty in 1976 that was published back then.  I would be curious to see if any research or history has been done on the cast iron grades used in the Eiffel Tower.  I would like to see the story and history of the progression on bronze alloying.  I recall reading a story about the Island of Cyprus almost seemed to have the proper ratio of naturally occurring copper and tin in the local ores, or sea bed nodules.  That would be interesting if the Copper Development Association has any history on that.

    Hello Patrick!

    You are very welcome!
All that everyone can share here related is very important. Archaeometallurgy can go form ancient times to the 1900s more or less if you want, it's very wide.
In my personal and professional journey, I did the restoration of an old iron bridge in my town (1890) not so damaged...but it need reparation, the material it's similar to the Eiffel because are contemporary and the material of this bridge came from England. The idea is to have here online a place to share materials with one another, and then maybe we can have a Committee dedicated to the diffusion of this knowledge, the possibilities of growth are interesting. You can share here what you had read too. Thanks for your comment!

    Hi Patricia,
I am definitely in. I did some work in archeometallurgy and published in my blog an article on the work I have done years ago, but it it is in French. Here is the link

    https://www.nbsmpconsult.com/blog/2020/04/10/archeometallurgie-fouiller-le-passe-pour-alimenter-le-futur

If there is any interest I can translate it in English.
I think it is a great idea to build a community on this topic within ASM International. There is so much to know on archeometallurgy and how it can increase our knowledge not only of mankind history but of the evolution of metallurgy and building links with modern metallurgy. There is a lot of work done and to be done in archeometallurgy, but still it is not very well known in the metallurgist community. Please count me in.

    Hello Sudhakar!

It is possible without a doubt! You are welcome!
But I believe in my understanding that first, you have to follow the logical steps here, first the online community, with members involved, and then the rest.
As I told you in the response to your message, if possible I can share my experience of 13 years in this branch. In my case, I have time starting on October 8, I have a seminar that I gave at my University on the subject in general for dissemination. With this time we give time to the system too to create here the community. Thanks for your comment!!

    Hi Nihad:

What a great combination: archaeometallurgy, a subject that I am interested in and French, a language that I am still trying to learn at my age!  I have saved your article and will study it for both reasons.  Thanks again.  I hope the subcommittee on this topic goes forward, as proposed by Ms. Silvana Carrizo.

    Best regards,

    Hello Nihad !!

    You're very welcome !!
Thanks for sharing!! I really appreciate that you have shared the knowledge !!
Sure, from the past in these studies we can take a lot of information, and make relationships between them and it is also very didactic to teach about metallurgy and metallography if this branch is not well known. I will share things about my blog too!
I need hands of collaboration because I feel that this proposal is taking flight and will become a Committee and volunteers will be needed !! Thank you for your comment! Be free translate to English Please!!

    Hello Ms. Carrizo,

The history of materials and metallurgy is fascinating to me as well and one of the driving forces behind my pursuit of this field. I would be delighted to be involved to whatever extent my other responsibilities allow. I'm especially interested in re-creating historical techniques because I have found that following the physical process grants insights which are impossible to gain in any other way.

    Hello Paul!

    You're welcome!!
Feel free to share the information you have!
Yes, it's interesting what they post here !, I met researchers trying to replicate the manufacturing processes of old pieces, they said they can't get the same material structure ... unfortunately ... This happened when museums didn't allow it to study pieces, in my case, it was with luck, always with non-invasive techniques, or with permission from the competent authority to cut a small, tiny part. Your contribution is very good! And we will need more volunteers if this space is going to be a Committee, and I think that is what will happen! Stay tuned!!

    Hi Patricia,
I would love to participate in this discussion.  Many years ago, I was involved in reinventing the process for smelting copper from Chalcopyrite ore that was used before the current modern techniques were developed.  I look forward to seeing what questions and discussions evolve.

    Hello Michael!!

    You are very welcome!!
    Thanks for your comment!!
Will be a good nice idea if you can share with us about your experiences with copper and chalcopyrite!!

As a form of a technician report or similar to add to the site of the Archaeometallurgy Committee, here one of the purposes is to share info, then to give diffusion in a variety of forms. So I encouraged you to share a file or files with us!

Now everyone who did comment in the post is a member of the Archaeometallurgy Committee!! So keep going with this!!

    Welcome!

    Hallo Patricia,
historical metallurgy has always been interesting and the Institute of Metallurgists had a historical activity in the past. There is an Historical Metallurgy Society in UK which helps to keep in touch with interesting topics so it would be great to have something closer to home on this side of the pond.

My specific interest has been in castings and heat treatment through the ages and it's emergence from one of the 'black arts' to a real science.

    Best regards
    Martin

    Hello David!!

Yes, it's funny and interesting and we can take so many info from the past and learn from materials, from history, conservation, restoration, and lots of topics,

So if you are interested and if you have some files and knowledge to share just join as in the Archaeometallurgy Committee!!

    Hello Martin!!

    You are very welcome!!

Thanks for your comment! If you have something to post or comment about castings and heat treatments it will be very interesting to all of us! Because one of the purposes of the Archaeometallurgy Committee is to share knowledge, diffusion of technical works: like research papers.

    Thanks for your comment!

Please join from now on the Archaeometallurgy Committee since yesterday we have the newest place that kindly ASM gives to us!

    Hello Patricia,
This is very interesting.  I have always been interested in metallurgy (my career) and history (my hobby).  So, this combination will indeed be extremely rewarding.  I think all of us can learn from history so much more than we normally do, and the better we learn from our past, the better we get in facing the future.
I am retired now and have no access to any R&D facility, so I cannot contribute by doing the routine metallurgy, but I will more than make up for it in doing the legwork and pursing the historical end of the equation.  So, I surely am interested in whatever form I can contribute.
Interestingly, I was going though the ASM website recently searching just on this subject, but did not find anything.  On more searching, I found the Historical Metallurgical Society in the UK (https://historicalmetallurgy.org/).  I think they have a pretty good and detailed program, which we can use to get started under the banner of ASM International.
