About the Plant Tour:
Gerdau Petersburg is a structural steel mill under the Gerdau Long Steel North America Division. The mill uses 100% recycled steel scrap and produces a variety of structural shapes for buildings, bridges, etc. Previously Chaparral Steel, this mill was acquired in 2007 by Gerdau, a Brazilian company, and the 14th largest steel producer in the world.
The tour will consist of a brief safety presentation by the plant’s safety manager, then a comprehensive tour through the melt shop and rolling mill. The mill will be in full operation during the tour, so the attendees will get a chance to see what heavy industry is really like!
Directions and Parking:
Take I-95 (north or south as the case may be) to Petersburg, then merge onto I-85 South. In 2.7 miles take exit 65 for Squirrel Level Road and then turn right onto Squirrel Level Road. In 400 feet turn left onto Boydton and Petersurg Plank Road. In 1.2 miles turn left, and in 0.9 miles make sharp left onto Hofheimer Way. The plant is on Hofheimer Way so in 0.5 miles arrive!
Approach the right side of the guard shack and you will receive a visitor’s pass. The security guard will direct you to the Administrative building with nearby parking. Plan to meet in the reception area upon entry of the Administrative building.
