FEATURE PRESENTATION: Iron, it's all in the foo-foo dust!
Cast Iron has been around for centuries and has undergone several amazing, transformative improvements in properties. We will review structure, the range of attainable properties, melting and casting techniques, history both ancient and modern, and examples of current practice.
Topics will include the Iron-Carbon system, Origins, Gray Iron, Ductile iron, Malleable Iron, White Iron, Compacted Graphite Irons, Special Heat Treatments and Magic Tricks, Production and Economics, Things Gone Wrong
SPEAKER BIO: Warren Williamson grew up in Chattanooga, TN in the period when it was still very much a foundry town with local production of metallurgical coke and plenty of large casting facilities such as Ross Meehan and Crane. He began his study of metallurgy under Prof. Karel Hujer and by age 14 had built a working blast furnace. A few years later, a more formal study of metallurgy was conducted at UT Knoxville under Professors Lundin, Spruiell and Becker. Following graduation, Warren studied the fine art of melt shop operations under Ralph Smith at Robertshaw Controls. Warren is currently Director of Metallurgical Engineering at Hastings Mfg. and holds a number of patents, most of which pertain to metal casting.
NEXT MEETING: Dr. Elizabeth Buc, Fire and Materials Research Lab, Livonia, MI on the intersection of fire and materials science/ engineering in vehicles and buildings will be Thursday, May 26, 2016.
