Benefitting the Wayne Quantz Memorial Fund Scholarship

About the Wayne Quantz Memorial Fund Scholarship:

Wayne Quantz was one of our most cherished ASM Houston Chapter members.  Wayne sadly passed away suddenly during the summer of 2008. The Wayne Quantz Memorial Fund was established in November 2009 to provide scholarships in remembrance and in honor of Wayne C. Quantz. The first scholarship was awarded in 2012.

Wayne Chester Quantz was born March 25, 1953 in Ypsilanti, Michigan and attended Western Michigan University where he obtained his B.S. in Metallurgy.  After graduation, Wayne moved to Houston and joined the ranks of our materials community.  Wayne worked in the oil tool manufacturing sector from 1977 until 1998 when he started his own consulting business, Quantz & Associates.  Through his career, he exhibited the qualities that we admire such as a high moral standard, a great work ethic and a genuinely warm personality; he made lasting contributions to the success of every organization that he was a part of.

He was an ASM member since September of 1972 and a key member of our ASM International Houston Chapter serving on various Committees through the 1980’s and 1990’s.  Wayne has the distinction of being the only person to have served two non-consecutive terms as Chairman of the Houston ASM Chapter; Chapter years 1996-1997 and 2005-2006.  He was always there to step up in time of need.  He was active in just about every facet of our Houston Chapter including the Materials Camp and as an Advisor to the ASM Houston Chapter Executive Board.  Wayne also served on the national level as Chapter Counsel Chairman with ASM International.

Wayne was a mentor to many through his work and ASM society activities.  His efforts in organizing and teaching our materials classes and the Teacher’s Camp demonstrate the emphasis and commitment that he had in educating the greater community on materials related subjects.  Since he believed so strongly in education, it is fitting that we have established a Memorial Fund in his honor. This Memorial Fund is used to provide scholarships to students pursuing an education in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science and metal-related fields.
