The ASM Materials Camp is a weeklong educational camp for teachers, hosted by the American Society of Materials (ASM). Our goal is to help educate STEM teachers in materials science and the potential career opportunities that the field has for students. The camp hosts a pair of master teachers that will provide a foundational knowledge of materials science for the teachers while also running physical experimentation to provide exposure to a wide variety of materials related teachable moments that the attendees can utilize in their classrooms. The camp’s training and experimentation is centered on the educational hands-on principles of Do, Make, and Create.
The ASM Materials Camp targets middle school and high school teachers in the fields of physics, chemistry, engineering, materials science, physical arts (metal work, ceramics, and glass), as well as career technical education fields like welding, automotive, etc. The class is predominantly geared towards hands-on experimentation and will provide attending teachers with multiple “take home” samples and materials to bring the experience straight to their classrooms. The Materials Camp also includes a 1-day field trip to one of our Houston area industrial partners which provides teachers an opportunity to see examples of materials science careers in action.
The cost of the ASM Teacher’s Camp is funded by a series of local sponsors and is free for the teachers to attend, with breakfast and lunch included. The camp will be 40 hours (4 CEU’s) and is scheduled to take place July 14-18th at the University of Houston Downtown.
