The ASM Pittsburgh Chapter will hold its monthly chapter meeting on May 21, 2026 at Bravo’s in Ross Township, PA. This will be Awards Night and Past Chair Night. The speaker will be Dr. C. Issac Garcia of the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Garci is the 2026 E.C. Bain awardee.

Bio
Dr. Garcia’s research interests are the optimization of the performance of advanced
high strength steels and other engineering alloying systems. His work on the alloy
design, thermomechanical processing and transformation behavior of AHSS has made
substantial contributions to the technical field. In that it provides both a challenge and an
opportunity to the design-processing-performance of modern steels. His research
group works closely with many local, regional, national, foreign steel producers,
fabricators and users.
Dr. Garcia’s expertise is in the following areas:
Physical Metallurgy of Steels (HSLA, AHSS, high carbon steels for wear
resistance applications, and stainless steels). Advanced microstructural
characterization techniques.
Development of computer controlled systems to perform physical simulations of
continuous annealing, batch annealing, high energy input annealing processes
and high temperature deformation processes.
Grain boundary engineering for improved formability and mechanical properties
(strength- toughness) through special alloy design- novel thermomechanical
processing methods and transformation behavior.
Development of a Unidirectional Solidification system to simulate conventional
and compact slab casting of AHSS and other type of steels. Hot charging and
deformation studies.
Compact Strip Processing alloy design and processing of steels. Nondestructive
techniques NDT/NDE and EMAT including signal processing analysis for
microstructural and defect evaluation.
Development of High Speed Steels and Cast Iron rolls for the Steel industry.
He is the recipient of many awards including the AIST 2014, 2015 and 2016 Rolls
Technology Award for Best Paper. Dr. Garcia has lectured on his work around the world
and also has authored and co-authored over 450 publications as well as several book
chapters. In addition, he has been part of the organizing committee of several national
and international conferences. He is a member of the editorial board and review board
of several journals. Professor Garcia currently holds five patents on his work.
