Global Trends Shaping the Future of Heat Treating

By Robert Hill FASM

President Solar Atmospheres of Western PA and Michigan

There are ever increasing environmental, processing, employee welfare and cybersecurity demands placed upon the commercial heat treater in business today. Commercial heat treaters today face a growing list of pressures that go well beyond simply meeting metallurgical specifications. Environmental regulations continue to tighten, requiring careful control of emissions, waste handling, and energy use. At the same time, customers expect faster turnaround and consistent quality, which puts strain on processing efficiency and equipment reliability.

Employee welfare has also become a central concern. Traditional heat-treating environments involve flames, smoke, explosive atmospheres, and potential exposure to hazardous materials. Companies must invest in processing equipment that not only protects their workforce but also meets regulatory standards. This author predicts the vacuum furnace will gain in popularity due to these pressures.

On top of that, cybersecurity is now part of daily operations. As furnaces, controls, and monitoring systems become more connected, the risk of data breaches or operational disruptions increases. Protecting sensitive customer data and ensuring system integrity requires new expertise and ongoing vigilance.

Taken together, these demands create a complex operating environment. Success in modern heat treating depends not just on technical skill, but on the ability to balance compliance, efficiency, safety, and digital security in a coordinated way.

 BIO

Robert Hill, FASM, President of Solar Atmospheres of Western Pennsylvania, brings over 40

years of metallurgical experience spanning a wide range of heat treating methodologies. Over the

past two decades, he has specialized in the development of large-scale vacuum furnace

technology and advanced vacuum heat treating processes, particularly for titanium applications.

In 2000, Hill assumed responsibility for launching Solar Atmospheres’ second facility in

Hermitage, Pennsylvania—Solar Atmospheres of Western Pennsylvania. Today, the facility has

grown into a 100,000-square-foot operation housing more than 20 vacuum furnaces, including

the world’s largest vacuum furnace, measuring 48 feet in length with a 150,000-pound capacity.

The plant primarily supports titanium-intensive industries, supplying critical materials to the

aerospace, medical, and power generation sectors worldwide.

Hill has authored numerous technical articles on vacuum technology and heat treating

applications. He has presented his work at major industry venues, including ASM International

Heat Treating Conferences, SME events, ASM chapter meetings, International Titanium

Association conferences, and Furnaces North America.

A dedicated member of ASM since 1980, Hill served as Chairman of the Philadelphia Liberty

Bell Chapter (2000–2001) and co-chaired the ASM Heat Treating Society Conference and

Exposition in 2003 and 2005. In 2010, he was appointed to the ASM Board of Trustees.

In 2009, he received the International Titanium Association Titanium Achievement Award on

behalf of his company. After six years on the Metal Treating Institute Board of Directors, he

became its President in October 2014.

Hill was inducted into ASM’s prestigious Class of Fellows in 2014 in Montreal, Canada. In

2022, he led the acquisition and operation of a new 50,000-square-foot facility in Chesterfield,

Michigan- Solar Atmospheres of Michigan Inc.
