Abstract:
Dr. Priya Manohar will talk about the evolution of steel manufacturing processes since the days of Andrew Carnegie that continues to drive industrial growth of Pittsburgh and surrounding regions. The lecture will focus on a multitude of significant manufacturing processes innovations including thermomechanical processing, recrystallization controlled rolling and direct strip casting of steels. Microstructures and properties that result as a consequence of a variety of process routes will be presented. The structure - property relationships in advanced microalloyed steel systems will be explored via physical experiments, computer simulation and mathematical modeling. Incorporation of more recent advances in expert systems and AI applications for steel process route designs and optimization will be demonstrated with specific examples.
Biographical Note:
Dr. Priyadarshan (Priya) Manohar holds a Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering (1985), Masters degree in Computer Science (1998) and PhD in Materials Engineering (1997). He has worked several years in the automotive industry along with positions as a research fellow at BHP Steel Institute, Australia and Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh. He currently works as a Professor of Industrial Engineering at Robert Morris University (RMU). Dr. Manohar has published over 90 research papers and written four technical book chapters. His area of research is structure property relationships in advanced microalloyed steels for oil and gas pipelines and thermomechanical processing of steels. He is the Chair of RMU Institutional Review Board, and Chair of University and School Graduate Curriculum Committees. Dr. Manohar is an ABET Outcomes Assessment Coordinator for the Engineering department at RMU. He has been past chair and officer of various committees within American Society for Materials (ASM), Pittsburgh Chapter and American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). He has been given a national award for developing interdisciplinary undergraduate curriculum in Product and Tool Design. He is also a member of The Metals, Minerals and Materials Society (TMS), and the American Iron Steel Institute (AIST). He is a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) and a registered Materials Professional.
