  • 1.  The Thermal Spray Open Mic Series is BACK by popular demand!

    Posted 10-11-2021 14:11

The ASM Thermal Spray Society will again provide students and emerging professionals with a rare opportunity to interact with the world's best, brightest and most influential leaders in the global thermal spray industry.

The first session in the 2021-22 monthly (virtual) series is Wednesday, October 20, 2021 – 9:00 a.m. ET:
"Thermal Spray - A Remarkably Versatile Technology with Many Career Opportunities"

    Featured Speaker:
Dr. Mark F. Smith, FASM, TSS HoF
    Retired, Sandia National Laboratories
    US Department of Energy

This presentation will begin with a brief discussion of how Dr. Smith came to be involved in thermal spray R&D and how that provided important opportunities for professional advancement. This will be followed by a few interesting examples of fundamental and applied thermal spray R&D projects drawn from Dr. Smith' nearly 40 year career at Sandia National Laboratories. Finally, Dr. Smith will offer a few thoughts about alternative career paths related to thermal spray and the question of whether or not to pursue an advanced degree.

Wednesday, November 17, 2021 – 9:00 a.m. ET: "From Scientific Breakthrough to Successful Product Development in Thermal Spray: from the Lab to the Industry"

    Dr. Dominique Poirier
Research Officer, Automotive and Surface Transportation
    National Research Council of Canada

This presentation will take you behind the scenes and show you how scientific breakthroughs are converted to innovations using concrete examples of the thermal spray field; from the initial R&D sample production on lab scale to full industrial commercialization. Dr. Poirier will draw on her experience at the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) to discuss intellectual property, prototyping, quality, process optimization, production scale-up, supply chain buildup and technological transfer. Different examples of industrial implementation in the thermal spray field will be highlighted; including plasma-spray ceramic coatings for ball-valves, cold-spray copper coatings for spent nuclear fuel storage and duplex arc-spray/cold spray iron-based coatings for car lightweight brakes.
