Thermal spray offers the possibility to develop and design a large number of different microstructures especially for ceramic coatings. Dr. Vassen will show and discuss different examples, as standard micro-cracked (e.g. for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs)), highly porous (for abradable seals) or segmented (TBCs), gas tight (membranes, environmental barrier coatings), self-healing dense (barrier layers), or columnar structured (TBCs). The different technologies to prepare such coatings as atmospheric plasma spraying (APS), suspension plasma spraying (SPS), high velocity oxygen fuel spraying (HVOF), plasma spray physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD) or very low pressure plasma spraying (VLPPS) will be described together with the specifics of the used feedstocks.
