Purpose:

The Technical Books Committee shall foster the development of excellence in ASM books by identifying worthwhile technical areas, suggesting subjects and authors, and recommending improvements in the published works. The Technical Books

Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee. It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.

Produce Committee is responsible for:
The committee is responsible for technical book type content published by ASM International. Product can be print and/or electronic. Technical books are distinguished from Handbooks and Conference books in that they are generally authored by one or a small group of authors on a specific topic. They are often produced under agreement with author for pay or royalty, as contrasted with Handbooks that are volunteer efforts.


Qualifications of Members:
Member: A member of ASM who can bring technical expertise and knowledge of ASM member content needs to the TBC. Members do not need to be technical authors, but some experience with writing, publishing, or reviewing articles, within their organization or other technical societies is beneficial.

They should have a commitment to the dissemination of knowledge. Members are expected to review proposals, assist in prioritizing content needs within ASM, assist in locating content contributors, and participate in teleconference meetings and the Annual meeting as they are able. Typically they should be willing to spend approximately 1- 2 hours per month on TBC activities.

Vice Chair: A member of TBC who has exhibited leadership skills and has been an active member of the committee, and is willing and able to devote roughly up to 5 hours per month on Committee activities.

Time Commitment:
Members 1 to 2 hours/ month.

Term:
Terms expire August 31. New term begins September 1

Key Responsibilities:
  • Attend and participate in Fall Meeting, as able, and Teleconferences
  • Review book proposals and perform other analysis (i.e., content gap analysis) on the average of one per month.
  • Analysis of ASM book content; look for product opportunities in areas of technical need.
  • Assist in locating sources of content.
  • Outreach to potential authors as opportunity arises.
  • Serve on content subcommittees in areas of interest.

Support of Committee Activities:
ASM Staff Liaison will provide an orientation and information prior to the beginning term date of September 1st annually. In addition, the Staff Liaison participates and is an active partner in all meetings and activities of the committee.
