Purpose:
The ASM Materials Properties Database Committee: 1.) Assesses the need for materials property information such as alloy designations, compositions, physical and mechanical property information; 2.) Oversees the development of data publications; 3.) Fosters the development of an integrated system for storage and retrieval of material property data for media independent delivery; and 4) Encourages and assists in the distribution of material property information to the engineering community.  The Materials Properties Database Committee shall work in collaboration with the Web, Content, Emerging Technologies Committee, and with other appropriate committees to support the ASM Strategic Plan, and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee.

Products and Services Committee is Responsible for:
  • Alloy Center (Alloy Finder, Materials Property Data, Corrosion Data, Coatings Data, Datasheets and        Diagrams)
  • Micrograph Database
  • Materials for Medical Devices Database (updated by Granta, hosted by ASM)
  • Corrosion Analysis Network (CAN) – Performance Data
  • Alloy Phase Diagrams Database (APD)
  • Pearson Crystal Database (PCD)
  • ICME Approach
  • Data Analytics
  • Ontology(ies)
Qualifications of Members:

Primary qualification is to knowledge and experience related to the development, application, or management of structured materials properties databases (numeric properties, graphs, tables, etc.).

Familiarity with ASM Materials Information Online products (as an end user, contributor or other) is a distinct plus.

The capability of participating, preferably in-person, during at least one major meeting per year (typically a fall meeting during the ASM Annual Event with MS&T).  The capability to participate directly on committee work both on-line and by conf. calls during the balance of the year.

Individuals who can contribute data or help structure/specify databases are also needed.

Committee Size:
Chair, Vice Chair, General membership - 18-24 members

Time Commitment:
Time commitment can vary depending on roles. General expectation is 2-4 hours per month; more when special projects arise, such as ICME and Subcommittees activities.

Term:
  • Term effective 1 Sept through 31st of August) – 1-3 year terms
  • New Members have three year terms
Key Responsibilities:
  • Help inventory databases and determine key gaps and opportunities
  • Prioritize database updates and new database development
  • Help identify key sources of data
  • 2018 Focus on Data Analytics and Ontologies
Support of Committee Activities:
ASM Staff Liaison will provide an orientation and information prior to the beginning term date of September 1st annually.  In addition, the Staff Liaison participates as committee secretary and is an active partner in all meetings and activities of the committee.
