Purpose:
The Volunteerism Committee will identify the needs of volunteers and from those needs create programs and processes that will promote volunteerism in the Affiliate Societies, Chapters, National Councils/Committees and in ASM overall.  The Committee will evaluate and improve existing processes as well as coordinate the development of new systems and tools to further enhance volunteerism.  The Volunteerism Committee shall support the ASM Strategic Plan and be accountable and responsible for those strategic actions which fall within the purview of the committee.  It shall also be the responsibility of the committee to contribute new program and service ideas that support the Strategic Plan.

Services Committee is Responsible for:
Volunteerism Strategic Initiative of the ASM Board of Trustees, Volunteer Handbook, Volunteer Connection Website, Volunteer Profile Articles.

Qualifications of Members:
  • Openings vary depending on demographic representation covering experience, background, gender, race, volunteer experience
  • No requirements for participation, no education levels required, no experience required
  • Even past members are invited to apply
Committee Size:
12-15 including officers (Past Chair, Chair and Vice Chair)

Time Commitment:

Annual Time Commitment: The Volunteerism Committee meets monthly 11 out of 12 months of the year.  When subcommittees are in operation, they meet monthly as well, with a maximum of 20 hours per year in teleconferences with an estimated 20 additional hours in off-call committee work and 2-4 hours per year at the face to face meetings (which is encouraged, but not required.)  This generates a total annual commitment of 42-44 hours annually of volunteer commitment.  This increases significantly for officer role and can reach upward of 80-88 hours annual, and may require formal presentations to finance committee and or board, Leadership Day’s presentations, etc.

Method of Meeting(s):  90% of the committees work is completed via teleconference.  Ad-hoc subcommittee work can increase this amount, depending on the current priority objectives and the level of implementation of the various projects of the committee.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Critical Issue:  ASM must engage, nurture, manage and grow volunteer resources to sustain itself and grow into new emerging technologies and markets.
  • Strategic Initiative:  Define and implement sustainable processes that insures that we optimize volunteer resources for the good of the materials community and the individual member.
Current Projects:

This committee is working to determine the current needs of volunteers (Nationally and at the Chapter level) as well as their level of satisfaction with the direction and support they are currently receiving.

This information will be used to refine or redefine volunteer communication, outreach, onboarding and recognition activities and programs.
