You have 15 seconds to tell someone what you do - what's your pitch??

I'll start: I'm Carrie Hawk, a ceramic engineer. Ceramic engineering is anything from toilet bowls to space shuttle tiles.

    What's yours???

Hi I'm Nate Bulcroft and I work with the ASM team who recently launched the ASM Data Ecosystem.

For generations, ASM has been the elite source of materials information for technicians, engineers, and scientists. Put another way, since 1913 ASM has filled the materials information needs of humans.

Building on that tradition, we are now arming the current and future generations of STEM professionals with the tools and data required to exponentially expand the boundaries of materials science through machine learning and engineering simulation. In other words, we need to fill the materials data needs of advanced computers.

    Visit Data-Ecosystem.org to learn more!

Love this topic, one of my favorite things to ask someone I meet. "Let's hear your elevator pitch." It also serves as a really good lesson about using point of view in communication.

tl;dr - Be sure to have multiple versions of your elevator pitch to suit the audience.

As a marketing guy, I felt it was worth a reply to say that you shouldn't have just one elevator pitch. The better question is "What versions do you have of your elevator pitch?"

Reading through these, most work great if you're speaking with someone already familiar with your field, but if you're talking to pretty much anyone else it's likely to soar over their head.

You absolutely need a detailed version for people in your field or related fields but consider having two others:

-one for someone who may be in a technical field or have some kind of other engineering background but not metallurgy or materials who won't know your acronyms and terminology. (A coworker of a friend at a retail product manufacturing company, maybe.)

-one for someone likely completely unfamiliar with anything to do with your field/industry, to whom you may as well be speaking Latin when you talk about additive manufacturing, tribology, SEM, non-ferrous alloys, etc. (Someone you meet at a non-professional social event.)

You won't always know which one to use, but context and setting often provide pretty solid clues. If the goal is to leave the person with a quick idea of what you do and you use terminology they can't understand, you missed the point. I'm guessing many of you already have these and used the context of the ASM forum to chose the one you shared, but I've heard this happen too many times not to comment just in case it helps someone out there.

The marketing lesson here is that considering the audience's point of view when designing your communications versus always using your own POV, is key.

If you start with a simpler pitch when talking to someone who's actually more familiar with the field, they are more likely to follow up with something like "Oh, I'm familiar with metallurgy, we do X, Y and Z..."

If you start with one that sails over their head, they're highly unlikely to tell you that they have no clue what you just said. Maybe you get a nod and "That's interesting."

I'll use myself as an example. With my role in marketing, the first two are fairly similar because I don't have to get too far down into the weeds on myself, I focus on the company. "Hi, I'm Eric Walton...":

    1) I am director of marketing for a company specializing in non-destructive and destructive testing with a full metallurgy lab. We do engineering consulting as well as training for NDT and welding certifications. We are A2LA and Nadcap accredited and are a certified AWS test facility.

    2) I am director of marketing for a company specializing in non-destructive and destructive testing with a full metallurgy lab. We do engineering consulting and training. We do a wide variety of work for automotive, aerospace, defense, power generation, transportation and a number of other industries.

    3) I handle marketing for a company that investigates why things might break, finds ways to break things and figures out why and how things broke. We help our clients make sure that their products don't fail and kill people.

Sometimes the last one is fun to start with if you know you have a chance to explain more as a follow up. It can serve as a nice icebreaker. Many of you already have that one nailed.

Sorry for the long post, couldn't help myself.

Eric's response is a good one though that viewpoint isn't limited to just marketing!  I always try to tailor my conversation to the level of likely understanding.  For failure analysis that mostly meant that there were only two levels, those who didn't know much at all about metallurgy and inspection, and those who did.  Most engineers fall into the former even if they did have to take a Materials course way back in the day.

Hi, I'm Paul.  I do for broken and failed industrial equipment what a medical coroner does for dead bodies - I look at the remains and work backwards based on knowledge of manufacturing, of systems and of circumstances, to find the cause of failure!  But there are, usually, no police involved.

There stands the problem. I am somewhat ancient and from the start my ambition was to be a good engineer. Now the world is looking for soft skills. I have always believed that the best way of marketing my particular skill set which includes failure investigation and integrity was to do a good job and let people talk to other people. Now, not so sure.
Still I will persist in doing the best job I can so that people talk.

Not just to David, but many of these "elevator pitches" are more like resume' paragraphs, or responses to "Please tell the court what your qualifications are to testify as an expert".

:-)  I've nothing against more technically written introductions here on the Connect site, and that's not a bad idea.  But this just isn't what she asked for.

Let's review her initial statement: "You've got 15 seconds...."  I tried speaking David's statement out loud and barely got past the first line in that much time.  So, "My name is ...., and I work with (some short phrase that includes a BRIEF concept or material name that your audience has likely heard of) to/for (client base such as metals industry, the company you work for, a portion of society that benefits, as PhD research, or whatever).  DING!  The elevator has arrived.

It may come in handy to have this as a practiced spoken 'package' in your pocket so to speak, which is the point of calling it the elevator pitch.  Even people in engineering areas sometimes have to resort to a little marketing....  Always keep in mind the audience to whom you are presenting.

    Paul and co -

I fully agree.  My first thought was "wow, these people
live and work in VERY tall buildings......"

"Hi, my name is Jim.  I show college students how
to use hand-held and table-top engineering instruments".

My building is only three floors.  This gives the other
    passenger(s) some time to respond.

While deviating from the original time limit, I am glad so many members of our community are introducing themselves and giving us an idea of who they are. Being able to summarize in 15 seconds is a great exercise to learn how to convey pertinent information in a concise manner, a skill too many engineers do not have!

You bet I can!  MY "mwd" is #4 on the list.  But what it really means is a skinny GPS that follows the drilling bit while a oil & gas well is being drilled.  It sends up some specific info so that the well can be put where the well is going to be most useful.

I have been selling the raw material for drill collars.
I stock a stainless based on 304, but enhanced with Nitrogen, Manganese and Silicon.
The metal is called Nitronic 60. The Nitrogen added when it is molten, stiffens the metal structure and inherently has more strength than 304.  The Manganese addition helps the Nitronic to Cold Work and it is not as brittle as Cold Worked 304.  The Silicon aids in wear resistance.  This Nitronic 60 SS is fully austenitic yet competes with other high strength (HS) stainless that are Ferritic or Martensitic.
The Nitronic 60 HS is widely known for gall resistant fasteners.

My company, High Performance Alloys specializes in Cold Working bars and small plates.  I have 5 different strength level that are commonly called out.
    From level 1. 110UTS,  90YLD, 35EL, 55RA
         to level 5. 200UTS, 180YLD,10EL, 45RA
