Great question Josh!
I used to watch my dad weld as a child and fell in love with the sparks and glowing metal. I have had the good providence to work in material research and development, failure analysis, process design, process improvement, metallurgy and manufacturing engineering in and around foundries. A few of the benefits are:
· Seeing glowing metal nearly as often as I'd like to see it
· A better understanding of the incredible complexity of creation and manufacturing systems
· An inexhaustible avalanche of things to learn
· A steady supply of problems to fix and opportunities to innovate
· That extremely satisfying "click" when the final puzzle piece fits into place on a particularly thorny problem and the solution presents itself
· The opportunity to work with dedicated and interesting people of character
· The opportunity to earn a living while doing all of the above
· Seeing glowing metal nearly as often as I'd like to see it
Why would anyone want to do anything else?
