Will it print? Powder Bed Fusion Additive Manufacturing of Bismuth-Telluride Thermoelectric

Dr. Ji Ma, University of Virginia

Abstract:  While laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing is largely applied to fabricate metal parts, recent work has extended its repertoire toward functional materials. We show an example of developing optimized laser powder bed fusion process aimed at creating highly dense bismuth telluride parts, and establish connections between processing parameters, melt pool geometries, defects, and thermoelectric properties. Rules of thumbs for potential printability of other functional materials via powder bed fusion technique will be discussed.

About the speaker:  Dr. Ji Ma is experienced in metal additive manufacturing with focus in materials and microstructure design through process parameters control, and high-throughput samples that allows simultaneous characterization of multiple process parameter sets. His group has successfully manufactured range of crystalline materials such as magnesium/cobalt composites, shape memory alloys, aluminum-nitride ceramics, and bismuth-telluride thermoelectric materials. He was the first to successfully fabricate shape memory alloy component with location-dependent transformation temperatures using laser powder bed fusion.
