The candidate logos are attached.
Candidate 1 explanation
'The sphere hitting the beam' represents a common treatment called shot peening which involves bombarding of materials with high velocity round particles or 'shots'.
This is used to induce beneficial residual stresses (depicted by the black up and down curve) in a component that increases its service life.
Symbolism:
- The sphere if you look closely is a miniature representation of the world and the people sitting inside represent a committee.
- The different patterns on the people symbolize their different backgrounds/nationalities/diversity (this being an international committee), while their positive and negative signs symbolize their opinions.
- Technically, the different patterns represent different crystallographic planes or microstructures that influence the overall nature of residual stresses induced in a component.
Candidate 2 appears to be residual stress in a beam cross section after unloading from elastic-plastic bending. It is intended to the be the background for a logo. The words "ASM Technical Committee on Residual Stress" would be superimposed on the image.
Candidate 3 is intended to be self-explanatory.
