Has anyone looked into this as a feasible solution for the future of heat treating?

Ovako first in the world to heat steel using hydrogen

"Together with Linde Gas AB, Ovako has conducted a full-scale trial using hydrogen to heat steel before rolling. The trial was performed with good results in one of the company's pit furnaces at the Hofors rolling mill in Sweden. This historic development for the steel industry proves that carbon dioxide emissions from rolling can be eliminated provided the right financial support and infrastructure are in place."

It is nice to hear about new technologies to push for carbon neutral steel production, but I have a question regarding this technology. For slab reheating before rolling I suppose decarburization is not such a big issue with hydrocarbon fuels, but with hydrogen as a fuel it would increase the decarburized layer depth and and thus affect the performance of the strip, isn't it? How is this issue assessed with the application of this technology?

I assume they are using radiant heating tubes to separate the combustion gas mixture from the furnace atmosphere.

I am assuming the steel is heated in a manner as to separate the furnace combustion gas from the internal furnace atmosphere (e.g. radiant tube).
