    A specification calls for HCRP wear resistant coating to a 304 stainless steel surface. I cannot find a definition of HCRP. Chrome oxide HVOF and plasma are popular in our industry, so could it be hexavalent chromium free plasma?

    John,

    I have no clue what that acronym stands for.  Can you share what specification referenced in the message?

    Maybe someone on the HVOF from ASTM may have an answer.

    Hi John,
    HCRP = Hard chrome replacement
    It means you have to use a wear resistant coating which is not hard chrome plating.
    WC HVOF coating or Cr2O3 are among the most famous replacements of Hard chrome plating.

    Dear John,

    Its mean not a hard chrome but it's a replacement of hard chrome, As described by Masih above it's generally Tungsten Carbide Coating applied by HVOF thermal spray process and Ceramic ChromeOxide-Cr2O3 Coating applied by APS process.

    All content which has Cr and WC are known as carcinogenic powder as Cr become hexavalent chrome after atmospheric oxidation which is define as carcinogenic powder. But you may refer MSDS of powder for better understanding of use.

    Kind Regards
