I'm not sure what is covered in other sections of the handbook so these may be covered in other places, but some potential ideas:
* ways to relieve stresses (thermal and mechanical)
* ways that residual stresses can actually reduce failures (such as a compressive RS on the surface)
* failures due to surface RS vs. failures due to RS throughout the part
* RS can lead to changes in the properties of the material, which can contribute to failures in use (rather than during fabrication as with quench or weld cracking). eg a reduction in ductility makes the part prone to fracture, as opposed to the RS increase the likelihood of cracking specifically.
* How combinations of RSs in the same part can contribute to failure.
* I believe that the application of some coatings can introduce RS that can inhibit the bonding of the coating to the substrate. Similarly, it could affect the bonding of some composite materials.
Some of those are probably not applicable to this specific chapter, but hopefully some are.

I am reaching out again for assistance with the chapter on failure analysis for our Residual Stress Handbook project. This project is part of the Residual Stress Technical Committee that formed in 2020.
Many of you have already provided guidance, and I truly appreciate the help. I have attempted to put together an outline. Case histories will be covered in a separate chapter. Together, we can get a solid chapter that will advance knowledge of how residual stresses cause failures and how to detect them.
Proposed outline:
- The residual stress failure dilemma – The failure often relieves the stresses we are trying to measure
- Failures often attributed to residual stress
- Quench cracking
- Fastener failures
- Welding failures
- ?
- ?
- The relationship between residual stress and fatigue
- The special cases of stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen embrittlement
- Methods to detect residual stress and the applicability to the type of failure
- ?
- ?
Please comment/expand/modify the above so we can cover the topic fully. I would like to see a collaboration between FAS and RSTC. I feel it would be a win/win for both entities.
