Presentation: Challenges with Testing

Abstract: Design and/or validation of a concept often involve testing to validate the idea or the premise under which the design assumptions were made.  There are by definition a number of different tests that can be conducted; from, coupon tests, component and full scale with each one of these having their own unique challenges with both part design and loading.  Coupon tests are typically limited in scope to look at a discrete locations and/or design feature with relatively simple designs.  Component tests on the other hand better simulate unique loading conditions but are challenging to simulate more realistic loading conditions or design variable interactions.  Full scale testing has its own challenges but will not be discussed. This presentation will review some challenges and considerations involved in the planning of a coupon and or simple component test program and some of the lessons learned by way of case studies of four programs performed at FTI.
