With SMST 2022 nearly half a year from now, it got me thinking about the CASMART 5th year student design challenge! The challenges give students the task to design "the material" or designing "with the material" using SMA technology. Students have the opportunity to showcase their creativity by applying engineering theories and design principles, and leveraging CASMART and SMST members' experience to address SMA design challenges in aeronautics, astronautics, medical industry, energy, and else.

My experience with participating in the 3rd year challenges has led to many great opportunities with working with professionals in the SMA community. There is still time to sign up for this year so that your students can put their knowledge to the test while adding a unique experience to their resume.

Let us know about your experience. A few links are provided below:

    Hello all,
This is a friendly reminder that registration is closing for this year's student design challenge very soon.

Give your students a chance to design...
with the material (tools and hardware)
    the material
    or a hardware demo (product)

to demonstrate the benefits of implementing SMAs to a chosen application.

To name a few benefits to the students include: presenting their research at a professional conference, a chance to publish their research, network and receive technical advice from professionals in the industry, academia, and government!

    Thanks,

Thank you for the reminder Faith.

    Esteemed SMST members,

If you don't have a team in the competition, there are many other ways you can help, starting with donating any amount to supporting these emerging Science and Engineering young professionals. https://www.asminternational.org/web/smst/sponsorship-casmart-student-design-competition . Your donation will go directly to the student participants. You can also join us on the day of the competition as a judge to impact the lives of some very talented young people. Or simply you can just join us at the competition to see some cool student projects.

Hope to see many of you "in-person" in May 2022.

    Othmane

    Hello all,

I would like to congratulate the students who participated in the 5th CASMART student challenge! And when we say "challenge" we mean it! Regardless of the obstacles the students had to face, the teams were able to showcase their results at the SMST 2022 conference. I believe a patent will be an additional outcome for one of the teams. You can find more information about the teams by clicking the link below.

The student challenges are biennial allowing students time to thoroughly develop their designs and attend the SMST conference. It may seem early to start talking about the next challenge; however, if you're interested in putting your own team together or if you're interested in becoming more involved with student outreach, then it is never too early to start preparing!

Use the CASMART page to find more information or start a discussion here.
