Practical Interpretation of Microstructures, 3 day, November 9-11, 2026

Practical Interpretation of Microstructures is a three-day course that combines lectures with hands-on microscopy practice to build skills in microstructural analysis. Students will work with microstructures from key alloy systems including steel, stainless steel, cast iron, titanium, copper, aluminum, superalloys, and other materials commonly seen in the field.

The course examines how microstructures change with different heat treatments and processing methods, including the differences between wrought and cast materials. Lectures are supported by examining real microstructures where important features are identified and discussed. Students will spend significant time at microscope stations examining about 60 prepared specimens, using an illustrated reference guide with detailed annotations.

No prerequisites are required, though having some background in sample preparation, heat treating, or metallurgy will enhance the understanding of the presented material.

Students are encouraged to bring their own prepared specimens for discussion during the course.
