Steel is vital for the durable infrastructure development needed for growing populations, provides affordable housing and mobility solutions, and is indispensable for energy generation and distribution. Due to its central role in making modern society sustainable, manufacturers are preparing the next generation of stronger, lighter, and more sustainable steel. This product development requires testing at micro and nanoscale.
OCAS, a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and the Flemish Region, is a research center active in metallurgy, coating, and steel application development.
This webinar highlights examples of advanced microscopy techniques applied to steel research at OCAS.

Speaker(s) Bio:
Hui (Maggie) Shi, Mélanie Gauvin, and Davit Melkonyan are research engineers in the Materials Characterization and Testing Department of OCAS.
Maggie Shi started working with TEM in 2009 while pursuing her Ph.D. at EMAT (University of Antwerp). She joined OCAS in 2014 and continues to explore the microstructural world by TEM. As a TEM specialist, Maggie supports the methodology development of TEM, FIB, EBSD, and TEM characterization related to ArcelorMittal R&D projects.
Mélanie Gauvin obtained her Ph.D. in materials science from the Ecole Centrale de Lyon in 2008. After postdocs at the University of California in San Diego and the Laboratory of Physics and Chemistry of Nano-Objects at INSA Toulouse, she joined OCAS in 2016. She is an expert in the characterization of functional materials and surfaces.
Davit Melkonyan majored in nanoscience and nanotechnology at the KU Leuven University. In 2013, he started his Ph.D. research on "Atomic Scale Observation of Atom Distributions in 3D Devices using Atom Probe Tomography" in close collaboration with imec. Davit joined OCAS in 2018 and continues to focus on new developments using APT.
