    Speaker, Title, Company:

Dr. Ben Sutton, Applications Team, Thermo-Calc Software Inc.

    Event Description:

Stainless steel grades are typically designated by their microstructure, where they are classified as austenitic, ferritic, duplex, martensitic, or precipitation-hardening. The diversity of achievable microstructures and material properties of stainless steels allows for usage in a wide range of applications. However, variations in alloy chemistry and processing conditions can lead to changes in microstructure that have an impact on material performance.

The CALPHAD (CALculation of PHAse Diagrams) method enables materials scientists and process engineers to efficiently explore the intersection of composition-processing-structure-property relationships for multicomponent alloys. This webinar will highlight a series of case studies where CALPHAD-based tools have been used to address challenges in stainless steel alloys. The following topics will be covered:

    • Effect of chemical composition on solidification mode and phase balance during welding and additive manufacturing
    • Diffusion and precipitation considerations during powder metallurgy-hot isostatic pressing
    • Alloy design and heat treatment optimization
    • Design of functionally graded components

    Speaker Bio:

Ben earned his Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from The Ohio State University. His work focused on integrating computational and experimental techniques to predict the microstructure evolution and cracking susceptibility of stainless steels and Ni-based alloys during solidification. He currently works at Thermo-Calc Software as a technical sales and applications consultant. Previously, Ben worked at the Electric Power Research Institute where he conducted research to solve materials challenges in the nuclear power industry.
