Abstract: Many severe and worsening industrial accidents led to the creation of Process Safety Management (PSM) standards and regulations in the 1990s. This presentation looks at the evolution of process safety, provides a brief overview of mechanical integrity specifically, and examines the role of the materials/corrosion engineer in contributing to the safe operation of chemical plants and refineries. Risk based inspection is one of the tools used by mechanical integrity personnel. Risk based inspection takes metallurgical damage mechanisms and knowledge of process conditions to assess probability of corrosion. Combined with the consequence of failure, a risk-based approach can be taken to tailor inspection activity to areas both more impactful to business operations and more likely to experience failures.
Bio: Joe has almost 10 years of working experience working in the refining industry. He graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering in 2013. He began his career working in renewables/biofuels and eventually transition to a Risked Based Inspection (RBI) consulting firm in Houston, Texas as Senior Project Lead - facilitating various mechanical integrity and inspection projects in Houston, Delaware City, and Los Angeles. In 2017 he began working as a Corrosion and Materials Engineering for PBF Energy, Delaware City Refinery. As the Corrosion and Materials engineer, he developed and managed programs for assessing environmental cracking risks, naphthenic acid and sulfidic corrosion, and high temperature damage mechanisms as well as facilitating RBI, Integrity operating windows, and Corrosion Control Document discussions, developing turnaround work scope, determining failure analysis, and selecting materials for new projects.
Joe Yin is current the Vice Chair for STG 34 Petroleum Refining Symposium for Corrosion 2022 and hold his API 580 certification.
