The name of the new community

Greetings to all and a happy Valentine's day!

I would like to propose "Historical Metallurgy" as the name for our activity.  I can't remember if this is one of the already listed options but, if not, please add it to the list.  If we have time, we can consider this at our next meeting this Thursday.  What say you?

Thank you Nassos for the Greetings!!

I like "Archaeometallurgy" or "Metallurgical Heritage"

See you next Thursday Monthly Meeting at 11 am

    Hello Patricia and Nassos,
I am very happy with the actual name of the Committee (Archeometallurgy). Since I was not in the meetings that had discussed the matter, I take the liberty to give my point of view.
"Archeometallurgy" is a name that has within it (archeology and metallurgy) what, I think, inspired the creation of this committee and makes it unique. It had for sure driven me to be part of it. Having done in the past work related to archeometallurgy, I know that there are communities in the world that will identify themselves in this name, for example in France or in different African countries where there are people actually working on Archeometallurgy (spelled "Archéométallurgie" in French).
"Historical Metallurgy" is a name that is much wider and that does not necessarily stresses on the archeology part. Besides the "Historical Metallurgy Society" exists already. "Metallurgical Heritage" falls within the same definition than "Historical Metallurgy". I think "Archeometallurgy" would be unique.
Looking forward discussing this further with you all

    Best regards,
    Nihad

    Very Welcome Nihad!!

Happy that you join us again!!

Yes I love "Archaeometallurgy" also is the name of this from the very very begining since September 2020, this is also the Winner of the non-technical discussion here and the Viewer Choice Winner, so this name has steps ahead another option and also has a place inside inconcious colective too, its so recognized and more easy to reach people when them identified us.

Privately I sent you an email, Please make sure to read so I can send the Scope in time.

Pay attention to ASM CONNECT to the next Thursday Meeting.

    Regards,

    Nihad and Patricia:

At our last meeting there seemed to be a move among those present toward changing the name. Three other names were proposed, which did not excite me so I decided to find a better name; hence my proposal.  There is a conflict of what I proposed with an existing society, as you and Peter also pointed out.  Given all of this, I would be perfectly happy with the original term of "Archaeometallurgy", even though it could be argued that not all of the work carried out deals with "ancient" artifacts and processes, as the term "archaeo" would imply.

Hopefully we can work through this on Thursday and, perhaps, leave the committee name as originally proposed by Patricia.

    Regards to both of you,

    Nassos

    Yes Nassos,

Its better "Archaeometallurgy" the name for our future Committtee also like the tradition of ASM of  " 1 NAME - COMMITTEE.ASM INTERNATIONAL", hope we can reach a common place.

I like "Archaeometallurgy Committee" for the name. Archaeology is the study of people's activities via recovered materials, and metallurgy is the study of such materials. It makes perfect sense!

This has been resolved.  There was a vote at the last meeting and Archaeometallurgy Committee was chosen.

The name is the same after strong discussions, but between January to Febreary the name was in the limbo.

And thanks to this threat where some members without fear expressed themselves, and I am really appreacited.

To the facts I remite me.

    Hi folks:

I do not understand the reason for these latest emails about the name of the community.  I am certain that at our last meeting of February 18 we voted to adopt "Archaeometallurgy" as the name for our activity.  Have I missed something?  Thanks,

    Nassos

I agree.  We voted, the name was decided, and that was it.  I think the only point of contention, and what started the discussion, was the scope of the term "archaeometallurgy" and we decided as a committee to use the broadest definition to make the Committee as inclusive as possible.

    Dear All,

I am quite happy with the name Archaeometallurgy, which can mean the metallurgy of the past or in the past, and it does describe what we want to do. The conference series Archaeometallurgy in Europe, for example, covers all periods and the most advanced of metal characterisation methods. The next one was planned to be in Sweden in 2022 ir 2023 but that is, of course, still very uncertain.

For me the important part is metallurgy; I am a metallurgist and the metallurgy I do is to answer archaeological and historical questions on the one hand and metallurgical questions on the other - for example, looking at ageing of metals at ambient temperature over 5000 years. The point is that it has to be good archaeology and good metallurgy. What has worried me is that some people working in archaeometallurgy see it as a separate discipline and become distant from the rest of metallurgy and do not access the knowledge they need, so mistakes get into the literature and stay there. I really want the community to take advantage of its position in ASM and stay rooted in good metallurgy.

I think I have mentioned before that I first looked at a microstructure in 1966 and have been hooked ever since, and I want to stay that way, talking to people who feel the same.

    All the best,
    Peter
