Dear Thermal Spray Community!
ASM Thermal Spray Society (TSS) is happy to announce the return of the TSS Open Mic Series.
The TSS Open Mic provides students and emerging professionals with a rare opportunity to interact with the world's best, brightest, and most influential leaders in the global thermal spray community.
The next speaker will be Dr. Alejandro Vargas-Uscategui, Cold Spray Specialist at CSIRO (Australia).
The title of his presentation is: "Engineer, Researcher or Scientist? What I think is at the core of working in cold spray and additive manufacturing and why it matters."
Abstract: Cold spray technology is a solid-state deposition technique that uses a supersonic jet stream to accelerate particles and smash them onto solid surfaces to form a deposit using severe and localised plastic deformation (mainly). That, by definition, means the process "adds" material onto a surface, and one could argue it is an "additive manufacturing" process in nature. I thought about that too when I started my research in this field, but this approach was not quite there yet. Additive manufacturing involves growing material into specific places to form a 3d object, generally from a digital file (commonly a CAD file). To make that happen, the "cold spray way of thinking" needed to go beyond materials and processes and now consider the interplay with advanced robotics and sensing technologies. What role did I assume in this cold spray journey, and how do I think it can help others in their path? In this talk, I will share reflections on my career path and why embracing new opportunities matters to me.
The live webinar will be given on Wednesday (October 19, 2022) at 9:00 am North American ET.
