  • 1.  Copper (Cu) grade for plasma anode

    Posted 05-10-2023 05:14

    Dear All:

I'm working on erosion/wear problem of plasma gun's anode.
As we know that the anode of plasma gun is made of copper.
Can anyone tell me which copper grade is best suited for anode.

    Sincerely,
    Satish

    Dear Satish,

I was told that the copper grade is definitely factor to consider when manufacturing the anodes of plasma spray torches, as well as, the nozzles of HVOF torches.

Moreover, I was also told that for W-lined copper anodes for plasma torches, the type of process you use to insert the W-lining into the copper anode (i.e., the bonding between the W and Cu) makes an importance difference in the performance of the part.

That said... for sure I am not an expert in this area. On the other hand, those who know this type of info may wish to keep it confidential.

Hopefully someone who has this type of knowledge can shine some light on it, here to all... or in a private message to you.

Or perhaps you may get an answer during the ITSC 2023... in less than two weeks :)

    Cheers!

    Dear Prof. Lima:
Thanks for you inputs. But my question was not for Cu-W (cathode), it was for only non W-lined anode (nozzles). I'm working to increase its life and durability. For sure W lined anode/cathodes have better life.
I'm just curious to know that which Cu grade is being used to make these anodes/cathodes. I would like to increase life without sacrifice Cu's thermal and electrical conductivity.

Looking forward to meeting you at ITSC 😊.

    Sincerely,
    Satish
