Reminiscent of ghosts and bones, these images of an aluminum casting are not only in keeping with our current spooky vibe here at ASM and IMS, they are also vividly demonstrating the differences observed when using bright field versus dark field on polished metallographic specimens.
In the bright field image (top), three different phases in slightly contrasting shades of grays and beiges are visible. We see the dark gray silicon (A), the light gray alpha Al-(Fe-Mn)Si and the beige Al2Cu.
If we look at the same area with dark field, suddenly we're seeing vibrant contrast between the phases. We may not be seeing beyond the veil, but these phases have appeared out of nowhere…spooky
